As ResumeWW accredited career consultants and resume writers, we understand how frustrating it is for job seekers to apply for their resumes but never hear back. We understand how frustrating it is, which is why we welcome the chance to partner with candidates and have them called in for interviews. Here are some of the most important causes applications are overlooked based on our background as recruiters.

Not following directions

This has little to do with your resume writing and more to do with how recruiting managers appreciate prospects who have a keen eye for information. Since employers get so many resumes, it’s normal for them to provide detailed guidelines on how to apply to a position as a way to weed out applicants who don’t obey guidance — so read the entire job application.

For example, if an employer requests that you send your resume in PDF format, along with a list of references and writing examples, to a particular email address with a specific subject line, they might be checking you. Ignore the instructions to the letter to ensure you pass the exam.

Typos and improper grammar

We all agree that mistakes happen. When an employer’s only detail for you is your resume, you want to make sure it’s going for you, not against you.

Read your resume aloud, make a trustworthy friend who is good at grammar and spelling proofread it, or better yet, employ a competent resume writing service to do it for you.

Don’t forget rigorous proofreading no matter which route you take to ensure your resume is telling the right tale. A ten-minute extra to re-read your resume might be the difference between receiving a call or not.

Overusing quick apply features

After uploading an application that took 45 minutes to complete, quick-apply features are a breath of fresh air. However, you might not get a call because you jumped the gun with a ‘quick submit.’ Only because it’s simple to apply for a position doesn’t mean you shouldn’t put in the same effort as if you were to hand-deliver your resume to the hiring manager.

Before you apply, make sure you actually meet the work specifications. If you read one or two bullet points that correspond to your experience and then press submit, you might be missing a critical criterion further down.

You’re overqualified

This is a familiar argument that job applicants are sick of hearing, but it is a real explanation of why you could be passed over.

If you’ve held a higher position or have far more experience than the job demands, including a cover letter is a perfect way to justify why you’re interested in this particular opportunity. Perhaps you’ve reached a point in your career that you’d like to shift direction, or perhaps you’d like to develop a whole new collection of skills. Address it in your cover letter to avoid being ignored as “too experienced.”
